Introduction
Stéphane briefly introduces the « Instructions Paintings », so named because they are linked to the instructions that Rudolf Stingel published in order to allow anybody to paint artworks similar to his. (1:52)
About the artist
Part 1 : « Artists have always been accused of being decorative. I just went to the extreme. » said Rudolf Stingel. Stéphane shares his first experiences with the artist’s work and his visit at his huge studio, back in the times around 2000, when Stéphane lived in New York. (5:11)
Part 2 : Stéphane points out that Rudolf Stingel’s work is a result of him thinking what an artistic practice is. Hence his deep interest into the process of creating a work of art. Most important of all, the question of paternity, that is at the center of his practice. (8:55)
Part 3 : Stéphane speaks about Rudolf Stingel’s immersive installation at Palazzo Grassi, in Venezia, in 2013. Then, speaking about the Serapi motif, he points out that Stingel went back using it in different way, some shown at the Beyeler Foundation, in 2019. (5:23)

Of the importance of making tests
Part 1 : Stéphane prepares a piece of unused canvas and attaches it on a cardboard in order to make some tests and he already starts to explain the best way to apply paint in order to get the best results. (9:57)
Part 2 : Stéphane shows tests that work and others that don’t and draws the attention on how applying well the gauze will definitely be fondamental in order to get the desired effect. (5:34)
Part 3 : Stéphane answers the question "what happens if you do not find the color that you like in your tubes of paint?" While showing how to get to the right color. (6:40)
Painting the artwork step-by-step
Part 1 : Stéphane applies the two colors on the canvas and explains why he starts with one preferably on the other. And then, he adds some of a third one in order to bring a little bit of poetry. Finally, he also shows that the difference of sizes between the two surfaces of colors and even their shapes have an importance. (10:49)
Part 2 : While taking the canvas out of the wall, Stéphane takes the opportunity to explain a little interesting and surprising trick on how to hang the painting there. He adds another insight on how to do if the gauze we have does not cover in one piece the entire canvas, in case of a very big canvas. And then, he shows us how to apply the gauze with precaution. Part 3 : Stéphane installs a protection on the wall (and floor) in order to spray the canvas with silver paint and then sprays it from top to bottom. Then comes the magic part, when he takes away the gauze and lets the painting appear in its whole, finished and beautiful! (6:31)
Bonus material (how to improve our technique)
Wanting to be honest and give the best of his tricks, Stéphane explains how by chance, he came about an easier and even more efficient way to apply the first layer of paint. For this, he tells the story of an edition of works he painted to celebrate the launch of his online painting classes. (9:18)
