About the artist : Stéphane makes a presentation about the Gerhard Richter’s life and work with his artist personal insights.
Stéphane introduces Gerhard Richter’s work and early life from Dresden to Reichenau, Deutschand. He speaks about his family and how they suffered from World War II and then, how life was in East Germany. (6:17)
Stéphane presents the tricky way the young Gerhard Richter had choose to enter the Dresden Art Academy and then, his life as an art student in the destroyed city of Dresden. (7:25)
Stéphane speaks about Richter’s return to a western art school, in Düsseldorf, where he has got as a professor, among others, Joseph Beuys, who claimed that painting was dead. (7:37)

Painting the artwork
Stéphane explains the importance of applying a first layer with a spalter brush and shows how to do so. He mentions that it is good to get used to the brush and experiment on the canvas during a process that has no consequence on the remaining of the work. He also takes the opportunity to explain how to easily and rapidly clean a brush from oil paint. (7:41)
Stéphane starts to paint the first layer with the wooden palette, to show you that it also works perfectly well. And also, he explains what effects can be expected when using a spatula to scrap the paint from the canvas.
